Pet owners must consider any damage their dog has caused, odors throughout the house, and the safety of buyers and real estate professionals. These issues must be addressed before listing in order to get the best price and fastest turnaround time.


My dog has dug holes in the yard. How can I improve my curb appeal?


Your home’s landscape and exterior is the first thing your buyers see and curb appeal (or lack thereof) leaves a lasting impression. Fix any damage, including holes and brown spots, in the lawn and clean up any toys, broken sticks, and animal droppings that buyers might see (or smell) when scoping out the property. Replace deck boards, railings, and siding pieces that have been chewed or significantly scratched. This is on top of mowing the lawn and trimming the hedges, which you should do regardless.


Can I leave my dog at home when the house is being shown?

You may also consider hiring a pet sitter or dog walker if you need to hand off pooch duty to someone else.

I’m a buyer. Can I bring my dog with me to open house?


Just as you wouldn’t bring your uninvited pets to a friend’s home, you should never arrive to an open house with Fido in tow. If he causes damage to the home, you may be stuck footing the bill.


What’s the best way to pack to minimize my dog’s anxiety?


Don’t pack everything all at once and keep the rooms in which your dog spends the most time as close to normal as possible until the last minute.


My dog doesn’t like strangers. Should I still hire a moving company or do it myself?


Having a professional moving company is almost always the best option. Not only will they carry insurance in case any of your personal belongings are damaged, your movers will have experience packing large, awkward, or fragile items. If your dog is less-than-friendly, put him in a crate or an occupied room while movers are present and explain that he is not a “people pooch.” Never leave your dog unsupervised with movers even if he or she is not typically aggressive.
